artist of the monthRosie the Riveter has always been an inspiration to Amanda who believes that “We CAN Do IT!”
She revels in transforming common materials like glass, bottles, and found objects into jewelry and three-dimensional crafts and artwork. Melting glass has become a type of therapy for her. Knowing the molten glass can burn her fingers keeps her truly focused in the present. Past and future do not apply while utilizing her oxygen/propane torch. Being educated in many processes of glass-forming at Emporia State University has given her a basis of understanding glass as a material. This underlying knowledge will help her to forge a new future in her experimentation with fusing and slumping in her studio at the Manitou Art Center. Amanda joined Commonwheel in 2014 with her husband and glass partner, Jon Murray. She will continue to honor his memory through the medium they loved and shared. The couple organized and implemented the 2016 interior renovations and helped to reopen after the three- month shutdown in 2020 with special emphasis on safe conditions for our members to return to Commonwheel. Amanda has contributed her time and talents as Vice President (2018-2019) President (2019- 2020), Festival Assistant Coordinator (2021-2022), and Manager (2021-present) at Commonwheel. “It is a powerful feeling to help local artists and craftspeople to fulfil their endeavors. Real people doing real things in reality. We CAN do IT!” wall artist opening!

Our Current Gallery ShowWelcome to Liminal Land
liminal /lĭm′ə-nəl/ adjective Liminal is a word for the in-between. It describes states, times, spaces, that exist at a point of change—a metaphorical threshold—as in “the liminal zone between sleep and wakefulness.” The word’s root is Latin: limen, meaning “threshold.”
Commonwheel presents Welcome to Liminal Land, an art exhibit featuring 6 Colorado artists who 'play' with the elements of the familiar and de-familiarize while exploring the betwixt and between. Because liminal times call for liminal art.
