Lori Vafiades: Teacher, Artist, Speaker
I have lived in Colorado Springs for over 30 years, moving away and returning 3 different times. She keeps calling me back and I always answer with an exuberant, “YES!” I love this place. The azure skies, purple mountains and beautiful people are a fertile ground for inspiration and great base for my hobby-world traveling.
I take two suitcases when I travel. One with personal items and the other filled with art supplies to leave with the nationals. Simply put, I find artists and go to them; Israel, South Africa, Europe, and most recently, India. Our team visited the lepers, orphans, kids who live in the dump, burn survivors, Gypsies and we lived with HIV patients. What a beautiful people. I found artists everywhere. I taught art classes and learned from them as well. What a joy to leave quality supplies with them --- professional grade watercolors, brushes, paper, ink pads, stamps, glitter, and quality ink pens (I introduced them to the Sharpie!)
Problem-empty suitcase! I fill it with papers, beads, fabrics, trims, wood, musical instruments-anything that culture specializes in. It is like Christmas when I get home and open my suitcase.
Creating art with luscious supplies that have a history is a joy and a privilege. At this time I am combining East Indian papers with vintage Americana: sewing patterns, 70 + year old dictionaries, vintage sheet music, I even use a Dickens book from the 1800’s. I am giving these things new life in my paintings. Each of my originals is carefully crafted to create what my customers have named “Really Happy Art.”
My work is protected with UV spray and 2 layers of non-yellowing varnish. I use acrylic paint, oil pastels, graphite, ink, gel pens, watercolor paint, watercolor crayons, alcohol inks and vintage, upcycled as well as new papers.
Personal stuff: married, 30 years, same guy (from Greece), 17 year old daughter (from India), dog, cat (from Colorado Springs).

In this class you will be painting a portrait of aspen trees. Aspens come in families and we will be creating elegant trees that have personality and whimsy. Learn classic watercolor application as well as fun techniques that make your portrait exciting.
We will also be working on a card, a bookmark and other quick projects. We will be allowing our painting time to dry and filling those moments of waiting with some fun projects.
You do not need to know how to draw a straight line. You do not need to have any watercolor experience. This fun class is for all levels including beginners. You MUST be willing to have fun.
