Part of 3rd Friday Art Walk in Manitou Springs.
Shino Smackdown showcases a Shino Glazes*, their use, and contribution to contemporary potters. Each participant in this show is required to provide 7-10 mugs to be sold. So c’mon out and “get mugged” at the Shino Smackdown!
Shino Smackdown potters include Vicky Hansen, Tracy Hartman Jensen, Nicole Copel, Bill Wilson, Lance Timco, Susan B. Demos, Don Cox, Willi Eggerman, and Deborah Hager.
Each artist is contributing their own glaze recipe to the show so that future generations of shino enthusiasts can build upon their experience.
*Shino glaze originated in Japan in the 1400’s and fell out of use over the next century. It was then rediscovered the 1920’s from archaeological remains of historic kiln sites and museum collections. In the 1970’s American potters created formulations of the glaze which would use clays and minerals that were commercially available in the States. The resulting glaze technique relies heavily on alchemy, chance, and experimentation which can be affected by at least 15+ variables.
