Welcome to Liminal Land
Featuring 6 local Colorado artists who 'play' with the elements of the familiar and defamiliarize while exploring the betwixt and between.
The recombination of elements is a quality also found in altered, (i.e. deconstructed) states of consciousness. Odd assortments of items appear in dreams and in productions of visionary artists. This is perhaps the essence of creativity - producing new patterns, new ways of seeing the world.
It is the analysis of the culture into factors and recombinations in any and every possible pattern, however weird, that is of the essence of liminality.

Welcome to Liminal Land
liminal /lĭm′ə-nəl/
adjective
Liminal is a word for the in-between. It describes states, times, spaces, that exist at a point of change—a metaphorical threshold—as in “the liminal zone between sleep and wakefulness.” The word’s root is Latin: limen, meaning “threshold.”
Commonwheel presents Welcome to Liminal Land, an art exhibit featuring 6 Colorado artists who 'play' with the elements of the familiar and de-familiarize while exploring the betwixt and between.
Because liminal times call for liminal art.

Michael Ortiz is a painter who enjoys a bright & bold color pallet with a unique approach to traditional subject matter. His goal while producing each piece is to have fun & to let loose. By using a variety of tools he is able to allow his inner child freedom on the canvas. The energetic mark making is the most fun and expressive approach to the painting process. He uses this unique therapy to tell his stories in a new light. He enjoys large scale paintings, murals, & any art related activities.

Troy Hobbs dwells in a world where the mundane meets the extraordinary, producing lowbrow surrealist artwork that emerges as a conversation between faith & the whimsical absurdity of existence. Through a selective color palette, unsettling forms, & paradoxical imagery, he delves into the paradoxes of belief, the pursuit of the divine, & the spiritual epiphanies found in the unlikeliest of places.
