Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center

Once again, the boys from Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center (ZPYSC) will be helping all weekend long by setting up and taking down festival tents and equipment. As part of their community service program, each day will work to keep the park clean and assist Pikes Peak Permaculture by replacing the various types of waste bins with empty ones to help with the sustainable side of the festival. ZPYSC is a long term treatment center for at-risk youth located on the west side of Colorado Springs. The facility and its youth have been helping with the festival for 10 years and are in line with one of the facility’s core values of giving back to the community through restorative justice. Stop by their booth where they will be selling water and home-baked cookies and let them know
they are appreciated helping out Commonwheel.​
2019 Commonwheel recruits UCCS students to help with sustainability for the second year in a row:

Students at UCCS taking a Geography Department course, "Introduction to Environmental Studies and Sustainability" taught by David Havlick, Professor, will get “hands-on” experience at the Art Festival. They will help sort the waste and interact with visitors to understand how human-environment interactions can work to create a more sustainable world.
FESTIVAL  COORDINATOR : Sam Kaffine
 Sam Kaffine has been a member of the Commonwheel Artists Co-op for 9 years. 

   After serving on the Festival Committee for many of those years, she accepted the position of Festival Coordinator when Julia Wright decided to retire. Julia has worked tirelessly to create and foster the Commonwheel Labor Day Art Festival throughout the years, and Sam is committed to preserving both the flavor and the quality of this premier event.

   Mostly self-taught, Sam is a multi-faceted jeweler who enjoys making chain by hand, as a meditation on the power of being connected. Recent workshops in Taos, NM and Boulder, CO have fueled her enthusiasm for making unique pieces that assist the wearer in experiencing their journey - with perhaps a little more elegance, a little more strength. When not making jewelry or coordinating this festival, Sam may be found volunteering on her local fire department, reading a good book or riding her motorcycle. She strives for balance in all things (but especially on two wheels).
