The Elliotts have worked together as potters, building and fine-turning their skills as dedicated partner-potters. Known for their high fire functional stoneware, they jointly throw and develop shapes that compliment the textures which are added to embellish the piece. Their current work includes, raku, high fire stoneware, and tiles. They have intensified their creative efforts in the last several years, pushing into new techniques and directions. Robyn and Curt have worked alongside many Colorado Springs and Denver ceramic artists. They are producing pieces that are available to the public through art galleries around the country.
Backgrounds in science and technology guide the learning and exploring process of their art. Solving problems through the careful study of results leads to new processes and ideas to try. Firing is always an exciting time, accepting the reality that chance plays a large part in the final look of each piece. With clay, each piece is an integrated whole. Every step in the production process focuses on achieving the desired end result. Even with careful planning and years of experience, surprising effects happen, making each piece unique. The Elliotts formulate their own glazes and work with a variety of firing techniques. They have slowly moved away from production driven schedules and concentrate in bringing each piece they produce into as rich a finished piece as possible.
The Elliotts are largely self-taught. Workshops and books are all a part of the learning process but acquiring skills demands hands-on efforts and a good eye when it comes to evaluating each piece. Attention to the details of line and form guide the throwing process and the additions of tops, handles, and additional embellishments gives each piece an identity all its own.
