Artist Statement: I have combined my love of art with my passion for sewing in the interpretation of my artistic medium, quilt art. Color, contrast, fabric design, and quilting design are the main elements I utilize in designing and making my quilts.
I have been interested in creating art since my earliest memories. I first studied formally in college. I was a fashion design major at Colorado State University. I later graduated with a degree in home economics education with a minor in textiles and clothing. In 1993, I joined the ranks of professional quilters. I began by designing monthly quilt blocks for High Country Quilts, a local Colorado Springs quilt shop. Later in 1993, I won the grand prize in the Northwest Fabrics yearly quilt contest with my landscape quilt "Spacious Skies."
The more quilting I did, the more I realized that color is the chief design element in quilting. I began to study color in earnest. In 1994, a new genre of quilting called "watercolor quilts" was introduced. The use of color, contrast, and fabric design was of supreme importance in these quilts made from 2" square patches of fabric. I took a class on watercolor quilting in 1995. This brought a new dimension to my quilting and I began using more fabrics to design and make each quilt.
General Information: I am offering fine quilt art at Commonwheel Artist's Co-Op. Many pieces will be one-of-a-kind and others will be offered as a limited series. The series quilts will really be one-of-a-kind also because duplicating any quilt design will not give you an exact reproduction due to variations in fabric design. The series quilts will be numbered and I will limit the number of quilts produced to 100.
Awards: 2nd Place for "Fine Fortune" in the miniture quilt category at the 2007 Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta juried show.
